Izabela, I think that the one on that particular jacket is machine-made. If you want a hand-made braid, I'd suggest an 8 element plait - which looks like a soutache braid, but works up easily. A 5 loop fingerloop would work well too, but not period correct (not a problem of course if you are going steampunk!). Both are on my Braids & Cords dvd, but if you follow the link through to my trimmings article above - there are instructions for an 8 and 5 element there. (Benefit of being a subscriber!) ;-)
